The Rosebery Herd was started
30 years ago with two female kids bought
from a lady in Southampton. I soon realised that two were not enough and began breeding on
a small scale in my back garden. Since then I have bred many kids, some show quality,
others not, but all adorable and very friendly.
Most of the pygmy goats found in this country originated from Africa,
mainly from Nigeria and The Cameroons where they provided meat and milk for the family. In
Britain the two types have been interbred and they are now all classed as pygmy goats.
The pygmy goat is a hardy animal, he is gentle and inquisitive and
loves company, both human and goat, that is why one must never be kept on its own.
Their needs are few, but important, shelter from the wind and rain, a
well fenced area for exercise, goat ration twice a day and a constant supply of hay and
water, this coupled with lots of love and attention and you will have contented and happy
goats.
The females and castrated males both make ideal pets, but they must be
kept outside. Anyone thinking of buying a couple should think of them as a long term
commitment and make sure they have considered all aspects, especially what to do with them
at holiday time.
Be warned you start with a couple of pygmy goats and before long
they have become a herd. It`s a wonderful hobby and opens up a whole new way of life,
especially for town dwellers.
The Pygmy Goat Club has been established since 1982 and is going from
strength to strength. We now have an On-Line Herd Book giving details and pedigrees of all
registered pygmy goats. If you would like information on how to join the Pygmy Goat Club
